2023 College Shower Celebrates Strong, Smart & Bold Graduating Seniors
At our 2023 College Shower, we celebrated our 24 graduating seniors who have been accepted to post-secondary education, and we equipped them with backpacks full of essentials for their journeys ahead!
All 24 girls completed our two-year College Access Now! (CAN!) Program which included SAT prep, college research and tours, application support, financial aid guidance, and scholarship application assistance.
To celebrate their achievements, the girls gathered with their families and caregivers for dinner at the Terrace Room in Oakland and heard—in both English and Spanish—from our CEO and program staff who have witnessed them grow and evolve during their time with us. We also heard from two of our scholars, Faqeha and Natalie, both long-term participants of Girls Inc.
Natalie, a participant since kindergarten, shared, “Thank you to girls Inc. for giving me the best support system and for giving us staff who pushed us to try our best and always looked out for our mental health. Girls Inc. is one of many programs I will forever be grateful to because of them I made lifelong friendships, I got to experience things I never imagined I would ever get to experience, and they always pushed me to step out of my comfort zone.”
Natalie will be attending UC Berkeley in the Fall, and Faqeha will be at San Jose State.
With the support of our partners and valued community, we provided each scholar with a backpack filled with items to support them on the next leg of their educational journey, including: a laptop, gift cards from Target, Amazon and Starbucks, Oakland A’s bucket hats, Oaklandish sling bags, Quay blue light glasses, pens, notepads and more!
