Girls Inc. Girls Win Over $85,000 in Scholarships

Four scholars from Girls Inc. of Alameda County have won scholarships in the 2020 Girls Inc. National Scholarship Competition! Kayla J., Gladys V., Jacky T., and Lin Z. received a total of $65,000 to be used toward college tuition. With over 100 applications coming from all over the United States and Canada, this highly competitive program typically awards only 23 scholarships.

Five additional seniors won scholarships directly from Girls Inc. of Alameda County. Ailani B. and Wendy H. won the Girls Inc. of Alameda County Kristi Yamaguchi Scholarship and Daniela Z., Maria E., and Alexis G. won the Girls Inc. of Alameda County San Francisco Foundation Scholarship.

All the girls who applied for the scholarships participated in a rigorous, three-month application cycle. Girls Inc. staff, volunteers, and essay mentors worked with the girls to hone their applications, and the girls dedicated significant time to write and refine their essays. Many of these girls will be the first in their families to attend college, and these funds make a huge difference in reducing stress around beginning their college experience.

Currently seniors in Alameda County, the scholars have participated in a variety of Girls Inc. programs. All credit Girls Inc. with helping them find their own voices, achieve academic excellence, become leaders in their schools and communities, and dream big for college and career.

We are so excited Jacqueline, Kayla, and Yonglin will take the stage to share their stories and how they have redefined their futures because of Girls Inc. at our Strong, Smart & Bold Luncheon on Friday, April 24 at Oakland Scottish Rite Center, 11:30 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

We had the opportunity to interview Lin about what this accomplishment means to her.  “College is expensive and this helps reduce the burden on my family. I’m grateful for this opportunity to take my next step.”

Congratulations to all our winners and to the staff and volunteers who partnered with them along the way!
