Changes to Programming in San Leandro

Girls Inc. of Alameda County has been in operation for 60 years, and it has been our privilege to have partnered with San Leandro Unified School District for the last 44 years! Since 1974 we have provided extended learning / out of school time programming in San Leandro schools, including more than 20 consecutive years at Wilson Elementary and John Muir Middle School where we worked with girls for as much as three hours a day, five times a week.

Over the decades we have taught tens of thousands of San Leandro girls literacy, STEM, self-defense, nutrition, fitness and body image, reproductive health, leadership skills, engaged them with hands-on STEM projects, taken them camping and kayaking, supported their growth mindset and access to college, and fueled career exploration.

Because of our long and special history with the San Leandro Unified School District, we funded 95% or more of our programming and services in San Leandro for the last six years. Our business model can no longer sustain this level of support and the school district, at this time, is not able to sustain or increase their support for Girls Inc. programs and services at their schools.  As a result, and with a heavy heart, we will no longer provide programming at Wilson and Muir beginning this fall, nor will we provide school-based mental health services at Muir, Jefferson Elementary, Roosevelt Elementary, San Leandro High, and Lincoln Continuation High.

We want to take this opportunity to celebrate the tremendous impact we have had together with the San Leandro Unified School District and to thank our thousands of San Leandro alumnae for inspiring us! So many success stories, so many wonderful memories. San Leandro will always have a dear place in our hearts.

We remain dedicated to inspiring girls and building community in Alameda County.
