Local Scholar Earns $20,000 Girls Inc. National Scholarship

High school senior Donna Wong of San Leandro has been selected along with nine other young women throughout the nation as a $20,000 scholarship winner in the competitive Girls Inc. National Scholar Program. We had the opportunity to interview Donna about this accomplishment, and what it means to her.

Donna arrived at Girls Inc. of Alameda County as a shy third-grader, and credits the program with helping her develop her love of math and science, make new friends from neighboring schools, and learn to speak her mind. When Donna first got the call about the scholarship award, she thought it was just “another reminder” from Girls Inc. staff about completing her college applications. When she and her mother heard the news, they were stunned!

Now Donna will be moving into her future with $20,000 for college, and her own unique voice and perspectives to contribute to the community. When asked about the impact she wants to make on others, Donna shared, “I want to show people that…a dream is not always something that’s unattainable.”
