Celene Alva

Literacy Specialist

Celene Alva was born in Michoacán Mexico and immigrated to the US when she was 8 years old. She grew up in South Monterey County where her family are farm workers. Celene started her career in youth work after being a participant of Girls Inc. of the Central Coast where she was also a Youth Facilitator and National Scholar in her final years of High School. Celene moved to the Bay Area to attend Cal State East Bay where she received degrees in English and Ethnic Studies in 2014 with aspirations of becoming a school day educator. Celene originally joined Girls Inc. of Alameda County in 2012 as a Program Leader and later assistant and summer coordinator. In 2016 she returned to graduate school attending the Bay Area Teacher Training Institute and University of the Pacific where she received her Masters in Education and California Teacher Credential in 2018. After 4 years serving the communities of San Francisco and East Oakland as a school day teacher Celene returned to Girls Inc. of Alameda County in 2020 as our Literacy Specialist. Her passion and motivation in education has always been driven by the opportunities that Literacy support afforded her and hopes to do the same for our young people.
