Partners for First-Ever Expanded Learning Apprenticeship Program in California
Hear directly from our Apprentices about their journeys with the program!

In Spring 2023, Girls Inc. of Alameda County launched an Expanded Learning* Apprenticeship, the first-of-its-kind in the afterschool space in the state of California.  This innovative, two-year program was developed in partnership with Berkeley City College, the Partnership for Children and Youth, the California Afterschool Network,  Early Care and Education Pathways to Success

The program utilizes an earn-and-learn model to eliminate the difficult choice between earning a wage or pursuing postsecondary education. Apprentices receive paid work experience through Girls Inc. of Alameda County, free tuition for college-level courses through Berkeley City College, and dedicated training and mentorship in the field of Expanded Learning/After School Programs.

Apprentices play a vital role in afterschool programs—fostering positive relationships, creating inviting environments, and leading engaging activities for youth—while simultaneously growing their own professional skills within a strong network of support from peers, employers, and educators.

Benefits to Apprentices,

our Youth, and our Community

The Expanded Learning Apprenticeship provides countless benefits to apprentices, our youth, and our community, including:

  • Relieving apprentices of the burden of choosing between work and attending school

  • Addressing a workforce shortage in critical afterschool programs that foster positive relationships, create supportive environments, and facilitate engaging and intentional activities for youth

  • Staffing afterschool programs with individuals who reflect the youth they serve and share their experiences

  • Investing in the professional development of individuals from less resourced communities who then invest their work experience back into those communities

  • A network of support from fellow apprentices, employers, and educators that includes support for housing, childcare, food insecurity and more.

The Expanded Learning Program Leader Apprenticeship was created in response to the California Department of Education’s effort to establish a paid training model that supports professional growth and financial stability for individuals from underrepresented backgrounds.

These programs are a critical support system for youth from under-resourced communities and their families, who have been disproportionately impacted by the effects of the pandemic, in addition to long-standing systemic inequities.
