Apprentices Create a Network of Support at Mini Mentoring Event

The Summer Intensive Academy for Expanded Learning Apprentices featured a Mini Mentoring event where they networked with various professionals in the education field from Girls Inc. of Alameda County (GIAC), the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) and the Here Lab (Higher Education, Race & the Economy) research institution. They met with each mentor to ask questions about their backgrounds, work experience, current roles and the education field at large.

This event provided a great opportunity for Apprentices to meet with individuals from similar cultures and backgrounds—many of whom also began in afterschool/expanded learning settings—who have found success in education following different pathways.

Mentors included:

  • Celene Alva, GIAC Literacy Specialist
  • Courtney Johnson Clendinen, GIAC Chief Programs Officer
  • Virgtrese McGee, GIAC Program Manager
  • Johanna Masis, GIAC Director of Program Quality, Assessment and Training
  • Sara Weseloh, GIAC Program Coordinator
  • Ryan Yarborough, GIAC Program Coordinator
  • Martha Peña, OUSD Expanded Learning Program Coordinator
  • Amairani Juarez, OUSD Teacher
  • Veronica Garcia, Higher Education, Race and the Economy Lab at UC Merced, Policy and Communications Director
