The following are just some of the volunteer opportunities available at Girls Inc. this year. To schedule a volunteer interview please contact Nicki Guard, Community Engagement Manager for more information.
Volunteer in Oakland or San Leandro.
Elementary: Train to support elementary girls in literacy, science, math, technology and health enrichment with the GIRLStart program (K-3rd grade), or as a partner in our WOW! program (4th-5th grade). Spend one (or more) afternoon per week role modeling a love for learning at schools in Oakland and San Leandro. Trainings take place one evening per month
Middle School: Partner with staff that specializes in dynamic programming just for middle school “tweens.” Assist in sports, technology, nutrition and academics. We are looking for volunteers who know how to support 6th-8th grade girls and who will serve as strong role models. Trainings are prescheduled for individuals or in small groups from September to April.
Women of Color Career Speakers: Join a team of women who understand the role that race and ethnicity plays on the pathway to a successful career. As a speaker you will present anecdotes from your own journey as well as conduct an activity related to your work. This volunteer project has had a strong impact on the way the teens view their future!
Host a Field Trip @ YOUR Workplace: This is one of the most popular ways local women inspire girls to pursue careers in technology, graphic design, city planning, politics, and engineering. A typical field trip consists of hosting a healthy lunch or snack, touring the office, a demonstration of your work with a hands-on component and a Mentoring Panel. Our staff will partner with you on the planning and preparation while the girls start researching your company and field of expertise. You will have an enormous impact in just one afternoon!
One Day Team Volunteering @ Girls Inc.: Have a day out of the office or classroom! Activities in the past have included family literacy nights, cooking demonstrations, fitness days, special reading buddy days, holiday parties, and more. Talk to the Volunteer Manager to make a plan specific to your group.
